Sheffield team to play first match since player's tragic death on way to game

A Sheffield team will take to the field in a cup final, and the last game of their current season this evening, just weeks after their star player died.

Net Six n Chill will take to the field at 8:20 PM against Brewdawg FC at Norton Sports Park.

It will be their first game since their star player and prolific goalscorer Tom Collier died last month.

Collier was a regular player for Net Six n Chill, a 7-a-side team that is run by his brother Joe, and plays in KickAbout's league.

He was so good that he scored 5 goals in a single game, while delivering a mesmerising performance.

And expectations are that it will be an emotional event, as Collier's death completely devastated everyone connected with the league.

Mat Hook, who created and runs the leagues told Yorkshire Live Collier's death hit everyone hard: "Tom’s passing has hit hard for all of us connected to Kickabout Sheffield 7 a side.

"He was a regular player for the last 2 and a half years and was a Premier Division title winner here just 3 days before his death.

Hook added that Tom was well loved. He said: "He was a friend of, and well-liked by numerous teams and players in our league, shown not least by the collective grief and togetherness of in response to this tragedy.”

And tonight's game will carry special meaning to all players involved and Hook hopes that the game will be a fitting tribute to Collier.

He said: “Tom would’ve played in this match and It will be no doubt be an emotional night for everyone involved.

"We hope it can form as a tribute to him, with a charity collection from tonight in his name."

On Facebook, the league issued a heartfelt announcement, telling people the 40 minute event would be a fitting occasion and attendees would be able to leave
