'She's very good' - Meet Hannah Schmitz, the brains behind Verstappen's Hungary win

Red Bull's principal strategy engineer Hannah Schmitz has been praised by driver Max Verstappen for the team's success at Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

After Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez qualified 10th and 11th respectively on Saturday, the team's strategist Schmitz is credited for Verstappen winning Sunday's race, while Perez claimed fifth spot.

What cost the likes of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was a move by their team to use Hard compound tyres early in the race, which "felt like driving on ice". But Verstappen managed his race stints without the hard tyres thanks to Schmitz's strategy and fought through the field to eventually win the race ahead of Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

Good guys and girls

In an interview carried out by Motorsport.com, Verstappen credited his Red Bull team for the outstanding job done in bringing him success in Hungary and other races during the F1 season so far.

"You can't afford many mistakes," said Verstappen.

"It's, of course, very hard to always be on the good side, let's say it like that. But I think we have a lot of good guys and girls in the team. Today, I think Hannah, our strategist, was insanely calm. Yeah, she's very good."

According to Verstappen, the Red Bull strategists chose "the right tyres at the right time".

Basically, a wrong decision at the pit wall from Ferrari strategists allowed Verstappen to extend his lead in the drivers' championship to 80 points.
