Shaun Wright-Phillips on Kevin De Bruyne's 'magical' Man City night at Wolves
Shaun Wright-Phillips has hailed Kevin De Bruyne after his fantastic four-goal showing away to Wolves. The Belgian was at his mesmeric best on Wednesday night as he put City back in the driving seat in the title race against Liverpool, scoring four goals in his side's 5-1 win over Wolves.
The Belgian playmaker demonstrated all of his attacking skills during the display, which saw him score four goals for the first time in a Premier League match. It is the second time a City player has done so in under a month after Gabriel Jesus scored four against Watford on April 23rd.
Wright-Phillips, who played for City between 1999 and 2005 before returning in 2009, has had his say on what could go down as one of the greatest Premier League performances of all time. He said that the Belgian took the game by the 'scruff of the neck' following his display.
He explained on City's Matchday Live: “De Bruyne had this game by the scruff of his neck.” said the former City winger on Matchday Live. “He controlled the game in every aspect.
“When he had the ball he dictated along the front. He knew when to slow it down. He was finding passes that most people didn’t see.
“If you give this man space whether he’s scoring or not he will find a way to cause serious problems like he did all night… it was magical.”
He added: “When you score a goal, and your team is playing the way you’re playing already, anything is possible,” he said. “If Kevin comes on the pitch like that the rest of the players will follow.
“He drives the whole team forward. He leads by example, and I think the players around him have risen to the occasion.”
