Shannon Sweeney and Caitlin Fryers add further wins for Ireland in Montenegro

Irish pair Shannon Sweeney and Caitlin Fryers have advanced to the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Montenegro.

Sweeney was out in the afternoon session as she faced off against Armenia's Gayane Ter-Bargseghyan in the minimumweight division.

It was a comfortable day’s work for the Mayo fighter as she gained a unanimous decision win after the three rounds on her debut at the championships.

It was clear from the first round that Sweeney was going to dominate proceedings and although Ter-Bargseghyan provided some resistance in the second round, the Westport boxer was able to ease to a 5-0 victory with a powerful third-round showing that rocked her opponent on a number of occasions.

Light flyweight Fryers became the ninth Irish fighter to make the quarter-finals, but only after a real battle with England's Savannah Stubley.

It was Stubley who took the first round 3-2 on the judges’ scorecards, but the Belfast fighter dug deep, just showing a bit more offence in the second to earn a 3-2 round.

That set up a massive final round and it was Fryers who prevailed as she again led from the front to secure a split-decision win.

The pair join Amy Broadhurst, Carly McNaul, Aoife O’Rourke, Michaela Walsh, Kellie Harrington, Kaci Rock and Christina Desmond in booking quarter-final spots.
