Shane Warne open to England job and reacts to decision to drop James Anderson and Stuart Broad

Australia legend Shane Warne says he is open to coaching Ashes rivals England and has reacted to the decision to drop James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

England are weighing up their options after sacking head coach Chris Silverwood in the aftermath of this winter’s Ashes defeat to Australia.

Warne’s former team-mate Justin Langer has been named as a possible contender for the job after leaving his role with Australia, but Warne himself insists he would be interested in speaking to England.

‘Yeah, I think I’d do a pretty good job, there’s a lot to work with,’ Warne told Sky Sports.

‘I’d like to do it, there’s so many good players in England, you’ve got a lot of depth there. They just need to get back to basics.

‘They’ve got the players but they’re just not performing. I’ve seen a lot of the England cricketers develop but they’re not performing right now.’

Langer resigned as Australia coach at the start of the month after rejecting a short-term contract extension, amid reports of tension within the squad.

The 51-year-old left the role having guided Australia to an emphatic Ashes win and to T20 World Cup glory in November.

Warne said of Langer: ‘If I were England, I’d be jumping at him.

‘Winning an Ashes and a World Cup, it doesn’t get much bigger than that for Australia, but for me [Langer] was a dead man walking when I didn’t hear the captain or any other players sticking up for him, saying he was fantastic. I found that really disappointing.

‘Why couldn’t Cricket Australia come out and say they were not renewing his contract straight away but would wait until the end of the summer, see who the best candidate is and if Langer is still the best candidate give him a contract?
