Shane Lowry drops back as Stephan Jaeger snatches lead in San Diego

Shane Lowry dropped outside the top thirty following a one-over second round at the Farmers Insurance Open in California.

Following an impressive opening round six-under 66 on the North Course at Torrey Pines, Lowry's second round on the renowned tougher South Course came undone in the final four holes.

One under for the day coming up the par-four 15th, Lowry made a bogey five, and dropped another shot on the 17th to move over par for the day, eventually signing for a 73 and a share of 36th place.

As a result, Lowry finds himself seven shots off the lead heading into the final two rounds ahead of the Saturday finish, to avoid a clash with Sunday's American football play-off action.

German Stephan Jaeger jumped 18 spots to take the lead in San Diego after making an eagle on the last hole.

Jaeger hit a 64 on the second round of the PGA tournament, finishing the day 12-under par, one stroke ahead of Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard.

The German made a 35 foot eagle on the final hole, saying after the day’s play that ending the round like that was "exciting".

"I wanted it to kind of go middle of the green and I went right at it. It ended up landing just short of the pin and scooting kind of back fringe," Jaeger said.

"Had a little downhill right-to-lefter about 35-feet and it ended up curling in. It was awesome to see."

Jaeger shot one bogey and seven birdies to go with his eagle.

Belgian Thomas Detry is tied in third place with France’s Matthieu Pavon, two strokes off the lead as European golfers occupy the top four at the half-way stage.

Waterford native Seamus Power missed the cut in California following a second round 70, ending his round on level par overall following a two-over opening round on Wednesday.
