Shamrock Rovers issue statement on 'inappropriate' messages Liam Burt sent to management

Shamrock Rovers have issued a statement following ex-player Liam Burt's social media comments made on 28 February, stating that the comments were a "false and inaccurate" account of the events that occurred following an injury and resulting surgery while on loan at Shelbourne in the 2024 season.

In a now deleted post on Instagram, the ex-Rangers and Celtic player criticised Rovers' handling of his injury and subsequent "mutual" cancelling of contract which was announced last week.

Citing a breakdown in communication as a key issue of contention, Burt shared screenshots of messages that he sent to the coaching staff of Shamrock Rovers regarding plans once his loan period was finished with Shelbourne at the end of last season.

Rovers' manager Stephen Bradley had wished him well after the derby game on Friday night with Shels.

"We wish him the best," was Bradley's response. "Hopefully he gets over his injury and kicks on and has a good career.

"He's done well here. He's won a league here. He should be happy. Move on and the best of luck with your career."

Shelbourne manager Damien Duff was also asked about Burt's comments after the 1-1 draw in Tolka Park on Friday evening and stated he was "oblivious."

"It doesn't involve me. So I don't really care, to be brutally honest.

"Liam loved it here. He played a big part in us winning the title. Especially on the run in, the last two, three games. He scored a big goal against Waterford," added Duff.
