Sevilla vs Man City: When Erling Haaland got revenge on Bono in 2020/21 Champions League

Erling Haaland looks set to reunite with Yassine ‘Bono’ Bounou on Tuesday night.

Manchester City get their 2022/23 Champions League campaign underway with a trip to Sevilla that will see their new star striker try to score past a goalkeeper that he has history with.

That’s because Haaland and Bono have met before under the European floodlights when Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla drew one another in the 2021/22 round of 16.

And it was the German side who booked themselves a place in the quarter-finals thanks in no small part to Haaland’s lethal goalscoring, finding the back of the net twice in both matches.

A brace from the future City striker at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium saw Dortmund secure a 3-2 win, before they hung onto their aggregate advantage with a 2-2 draw back in Germany.

On that occasion, Haaland wrapped up his fourth and final goal of the tie from the penalty spot, but not before Bono had dramatically denied him just seconds earlier.

That’s because Haaland looked to have missed the spot-kick when his fizzing strike into the bottom right-hand corner was thwarted by the Sevilla shot-stopper who guessed correctly.

Cue the beef, because it was at this point that Bono decided to let Haaland know what just went down with footage showing him shouting in the Dortmund forward’s ear as he ran past.

However, the drama didn’t end there as VAR was right on cue to order a retake, revealing that the man between the sticks for Sevilla had indeed been off his line when the ball was kicked.

As such, Haaland got a second bite of the cherry and didn’t make the same mistake twice, bravely aiming for the exact same corner and just about finding the net despite Bono once again reading him.
