Sevilla claim Europa League glory after penalty shootout

Sevilla maintained their stranglehold on the Europa League after winning the competition for the seventh time after a penalty shootout victory over Roma in Budapest.

The La Liga side, who had won all six finals they played in previously, emerged victorious at the Ferenc Puskas Arena 3-1 on penalties when 146 minutes of play couldn't separate the sides in a game low on quality, yet high on tension.

Sevilla's Moroccan goalkeeper Bono, who denied Spain in a World Cup shootout last December, was again the hero, denying Gianlucca Mancini with his legs before Roger Ibanez followed that up for Roma by hitting the post.

It allowed Gonzalo Montiel, the man who scored the decisive penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final victory over France, the chance to win another major final, which he took at the second time of asking.

Roma took the lead in the 35th minute when Gianluca Mancini slid a superb ball through for Argentinian World Cup winner Paolo Dybala who tucked his shot past Bono into the bottom-right corner of the net.

In a feisty first half, the Serie A side dominated until the last five minutes when Sevilla had two great chances to equalise, with Ivan Rakitic hitting the post from 25 yards deep into injury-time.

An equaliser duly came 10 minutes after the resumption when another brilliant ball in from the right by veteran Jesus Navas hit off defender Mancini and bounced past Rui Patricio.

In a half not overly high on quality but not short of drama, both sides had penalty appeals, one awarded then overturned (Sevilla), one not awarded, but it was probably the right call not to give either as the tie went to extra time.
