Seventh straight defeat for Spurs as Mayo steers City to iKapa derby bragging rights

Khanyiso Mayo's second-half brace secured a 3-1 DStv Premiership victory for Cape Town City in the iKapa derby against Cape Town Spurs at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Eric Tinkler's City climbed five places to eighth in the league standings, while Shaun Bartlett's Spurs suffered their seventh consecutive loss and remained at the bottom of the table.

This fixture was crucial for both teams, with City hoping to move clear of the relegation zone after a slow start to the season, while Spurs were equally eager to secure maximum points.

Spurs made a bold statement only three minutes in, exploiting a lapse in City's defence. Chumani Butsaka sent a precision pass to Ashley Cupido who deftly curved the ball past a diving Darren Keet.

While Spurs had the early lead, City quickly found their groove, dominating possession and consistently challenging a wobbly Spurs defence.

Both Tinkler and Bartlett believe in the element of luck in football, and City had a stroke of good fortune when referee Thando Ndzanzeka awarded them a penalty due to a handball by Rushwin Dortley.

Darwin Gonzalez confidently dispatched the penalty past Sam Ramsbottom, who guessed the direction right but couldn't reach the ball, signalling City's resurgence.

In the build-up to the 70th minute, Cape Town City picked up their pace and managed to seize the lead thanks to an astute play by Mayo.

Gonzalez, taking control of the situation, advanced down the left-hand flank. The South American forward skilfully delivered a pass into the small box, and Mayo's flick at the near post found the back of the net.

With just five minutes remaining, City delivered the final blow, and Mayo secured his brace in the iKapa Derby.
