Setback for AFN as Edwards dumps athletics for boxing
What appears a setback for Nigeria athletics has occurred as former Big Brother Naija reality star and two-time Nigeria high jump champion, Mike Edwards has dumped athletics for professional boxing.
The African Athletics Championships silver medal winner made the announcement via his X handle on Friday. According to SportsNow.com, Edwards will be joining the Cruiserweight division of the Misfits Boxing. His debut bout would be against Jake Cornish on a yet-to-be-announced date.
Edwards wrote: “Breaking News: Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing.
“Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.” Edwards, a former British track and field athlete switched allegiance to Nigeria in August 2018, and holds a lifetime best of 2.25m in the high jump.
He won the Nigeria Championships twice (2021 and 2022) and made it to the final of the African Athletics Championships twice, finishing fourth in 2018 before losing the gold medal on countback four years later. He was a finalist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
