Serie A club confirm transfer interest in Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani

The president of Italian club Salernitana, Danilo Iervolino, has admitted that he would love to sign outgoing Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani this summer.

The Uruguay international, 35, made his final appearance for United on Sunday, starting the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, ahead of his contract expiring at the end of next month. He is expected to be among six first-team players to leave Old Trafford when their deals expire next month, following the likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard for the exit door.

Cavani — who joined United in October 2020 on a free transfer — struggled for regular minutes this season due to injury, making just 20 appearances in all competitions. He only scored twice, with his last goal coming against Newcastle on December 27.

His departure will see United need to invest in a new, younger striker to provide competition and support for Cristiano Ronaldo. Cavani, though, has already been linked with numerous clubs in recent months, including some in Spain and South America.

However, Italian club Salernitana — who narrowly avoided relegation from Serie A this season — are the latest club to throw their hat into the ring. President Iervolino believes luring him to the club would have a huge impact on not just the club but the city as well.

He said: "I'd love to sign Edinson Cavani as free agent. Cavani would be an incredible gift for the city, as Salernitana are staying in Serie A."

Iervolino added: "I will say two names that seem impossible, but if they were possible and the coach liked them, I'd try to sign Edinson Cavani, who has left unforgettable memories in this region,
