Sergio Perez: Monaco to get even harder in new F1 cars

Sergio Perez says the size of the new F1 cars and the further reduced visibility out of them is going to make the challenge of Monaco even harder this season.

The new Formula 1 campaign gets underway this weekend in Bahrain and many are thinking that Red Bull look the strongest of all the teams, closely followed by Ferrari.

Certainly, Perez will be hoping that is the case as he will naturally have hopes that he can put a challenge together for the championship.

Last year, his race pace was good more often than not but his qualifying performances on Saturday let him down a little too often, and that is something he’ll be eager to improve upon.

A driver who is very adaptable, the Mexican should find the change to the new regulations easier than many in the field but even he admits that the new cars are bringing challenges greater than they have seen before in terms of visibility.

Speaking to a Red Bull podcast, he was asked about what track he was looking forward to driving most in the new RB18 and he instead revealed he wasn’t exactly excited for Monaco when trying to peer over the new, larger wheel these 2022 cars have.

“I certainly know which I’m not looking forward and it’s Monaco.”

“It’s bumpy but also the visibility,” he explained.

F1 cars are notoriously hard to see out of for the drivers, with them low down in the cockpit and surrounded by high sides and the halo to keep them safe.

That’s now been added to by the bigger wheel dimensions and so going around the streets of Monaco in these new beasts, if it wasn’t hard enough already, is going to be some challenge indeed.

That is what F1 should be, though, and Perez will still relish getting to grips with things.
