Sergio Perez gives update on F1 future and discusses relationship with Max Verstappen

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez says that he does not know what the future holds for him past the end of this season but he is enjoying working with Max Verstappen.

The Mexican will feel as though he has a shot at the title this season in F1, with the Red Bull car looking very strong from the off.

Indeed, he showed his pace in the RB18 last time out in Saudi Arabia as he stuck the car on pole, and only bad luck around the first set of pit stops prevented him from potentially winning the Grand Prix.

It could be a big year for him, then, and he admits that he is so focused on 2022, he has not thought about what the future could hold for him at the end of this season:

“I’ve been in Formula 1 for 12 years,” Perez said.

“I’m so focused on this season that I haven’t even thought about it. Eventually it will come and it won’t take long in either direction, but it’s something I haven’t thought about yet.”

It does appear that Checo is enjoying his time at Red Bull, though, and he has opened up on his relationship with Max Verstappen as the two look to push the team towards Constructors’ glory this season:

“We are more alike than people think.

“F1 is not everything, we have a life outside of the sport and that is why we respect each other and have good times together, which I think is also important for the team.”

It’s obviously a bit early to be thinking about contracts and Perez extending his stay at Red Bull, but a time will come where it is revealed whether he is staying for a little bit longer or moving to a new team.

Focus for him, though, will be to try and challenge for the title this year and if he can get a bit more fortune in the races ahead than he did in Saudi, then you cannot rule him out at this point in the campaign.
