Serena Williams: Is Iga Świątek the next star to dominate women’s tennis?

Iga Świątek extended her incredible winning streak to 28 consecutive matches after triumphing at the Italian Open.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable 2022, winning five consecutive WTA titles. She now heads to Roland-Garros on the hunt for her second Grand Slam title. 

If Świątek does win the French Open, she will become the first player to win more than five titles in a single season since Serena Williams earned seven in 2014.

In fact, a number of statistics suggest Świątek could soon secure the level of domination once enjoyed by Williams, considered the greatest female tennis player of all time.

She only lost 21 games en route to the Italian Open title, the lowest since Williams lost 14 in 2013.

Świątek subsequently joined the 23-time Grand Slam champion in winning four or more WTA 1000 titles in the same season. Williams holds the record with five WTA 1000 titles in 2013. 

The world number one is also closing in on Williams’s longest winning streak of 34 straight matches, recorded in 2013. 

Despite these impressive statistics, Świątek is yet to make her mark at the highest stage of tennis in the same way that Willliams has. The Polish star only has one Grand Slam to her name so far, having triumphed at the French Open in 2020. 

This could start to change at this year’s edition of Roland-Garros, which is scheduled for May 22nd to June 5th. 

“Honestly I’m going to do the same way I’ve done here, also on other tournaments,” Świątek said.

“For sure it’s going to be a little bit harder with all the breaks that we’re going to have between matches. I also like the rhythm that we have on Grand Slams.
