Semi-automated offside: Leverkusen's ridiculous disallowed goal vs Brugge
Bayer Leverkusen suffered defeat in their first group stage match of the 2022/23 Champions League season.
The German side travelled to Club Brugge in search of victory, but were on the receiving end of a disappointing 1-0 loss.
A goal from Abakar Sylla in the 42nd minute of play was enough for the home side to bag three priceless points.
Leverkusen will feel they should have left the Belgian capital with at least a point, though.
Gerardo Seoane’s side had more possession and more shots on goal, while they also had a goal chalked off by VAR for a rather ludicrous offside decision.
Now in case you’re unaware, there’s a new semi-automated offside system operating in the Champions League this season, which first reared its head in Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat away at Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
The new technology is supposed to aid in the removal of controversial VAR calls, but that sadly wasn’t the case for Leverkusen at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Jonathan Tah had a goal disallowed for offside and to say it was a close call would be the understatement of all understatements.
Here’s footage of the strike from the defender that was eventually not allowed to stand…
