Second Leicester ace on Real Madrid radar as Spanish giants eye ‘the next David Beckham’

Youri Tielemans is not the only Leicester star in Real Madrid’s sights as they are reportedly plotting a move for one-cap England international James Maddison.

The attacking midfielder struggled towards the start of the season, going eight Premier League games without a goal or assist. However, he went through a purple patch in November and December, registering four goals and three assists in just five matches.

Maddison has added to his tally with strikes against Burnley and Brentford in recent league victories.

The 25-year-old is beginning to show the form which saw him break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, despite fierce competition for places in attack.

Leicester are benefitting from Maddison’s rich vein of form, but it could see him become the subject of a huge bid this summer.

According to Goal, who cite reports in Spain, Real Madrid are looking to find Luka Modric’s successor in midfield. The Ballon d’Or winner is now 36 and likely to retire in the next few years.

They have previously targeted Tielemans, although Maddison is now a priority ahead of the transfer window reopening.

The original report labels Maddison as ‘the next David Beckham’. Maddison certainly has great technique when shooting and crossing, although he is yet to reach Beckham’s level.

Nevertheless, Real believe Maddison can help catapult them into a new era over the next few seasons.

One sticking point for the La Liga leaders is his price tag. Despite Maddison’s market value being around £42million, the Foxes would want £67m to sell.

This is a significant sum, even for Real, and may see them pursue alternative midfielders. Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Ryan Gravenberch of Ajax are potential options.
