Second Greater Manchester school put in lockdown

Two Tameside schools have been forced to implement lockdown procedures over the last 24 hours after 'hoax calls'.

Fairfield High School for Girls was placed under lockdown on Friday afternoon (October 4) following what they described as an 'emergency incident' that turned out to be a hoax call. The exact nature of the call is not known.

It follows a near identical incident on Thursday (October 3) at Droylsden Academy. Police were called to the Manor Road site after they received a 'hoax call from a member of the public with no known links to the school'. It is not yet known whether the two calls were connected.

In a statement, Fairfield High School for Girls said: "Following a phone call, which we now know to be a hoax, we immediately implemented our lockdown procedures to prioritise the safety of all students and staff. The police were notified and responded swiftly, conducting a thorough assessment of the site. They later confirmed that the premises were safe and secure. Once it was determined that there was no threat to students or staff, the school day resumed as normal.

"We would like to express our gratitude to all students for their cooperation and maturity during the situation. Their calm response greatly contributed to the safety and wellbeing of everyone.

"We extend our sincere thanks to parents for their understanding and support during this time. We would also like to express our appreciation to Greater Manchester Police for their prompt assistance and their commendations on the efficient and effective implementation of our lockdown procedures."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were called at around 11:15am
