Sebastian Vettel addresses Mick Schumacher to Aston Martin suggestion

Sebastian Vettel has said that he’d back Mick Schumacher to succeed at Aston Martin if the team opted to go for the young German to replace his outgoing compatriot.

Vettel revealed he’d be leaving F1 at the end of this season on Thursday, causing quite the stir in the paddock at the Hungaroring and further afield.

Indeed, the four-time world champion will leave quite the void in the sport but planet Formula 1 will keep on spinning and, in that spirit, attention has turned to who might fill the vacant seat for 2023.

Given Seb’s close ties with Mick Schumacher, the question was naturally asked whether Vettel would lobby for the Haas driver to head to Aston, and Seb said he thinks Mick would do a good job if he was selected, though ultimately it’s not up to him.

“Obviously I spoke to Lawrence [Wednesday] and told him that I’m not going to continue,” said Vettel.

“We did have a very, very brief chat about what might be next.

“I do have my opinion. I mean, I think very highly of Mick. I’m obviously not entirely objective, because I’m very close to him. But I do think he’s a great driver.

“And he’s a learner, he keeps learning when others sort of stall or stop making progress. So he does have qualities, but he’s also very young still and doesn’t have a lot of experience.

“So I don’t know, it’s not my decision. If I’m asked I will give my opinion and not hold back, but in the end the team has to make that decision.”

Seb and Mick have forged a really strong bond in the last couple of years that they have been in the paddock, with the four-time world champion feeling as though he wanted to help guide the young Schumacher, whilst the Haas man has obviously been only too grateful to receive such advice.

It’ll be interesting to see
