Seamus Flanagan: Munster final was 'a game for the ages'

Limerick's Seamus Flanagan believes their Munster Hurling final triumph in an extra-time epic against Clare will go down as "a game for the ages".

A tightly-fought battle at Semple Stadium went the distance after Clare's Tony Kelly forced extra-time with a late sideline cut but Limerick ultimately prevailed 1-29 to 0-29.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport at full-time, Flanagan - who scored 0-08 of Limerick's total - echoed much of the reaction to the match.

"Unbelievable. What a game. It was a game for the ages," he said.

"Clare put it up to us all the way but all I can say is taking us to extra-time, everything that happened there it was incredible to be involved in.

"An incredible game and one that will be remembered for the ages.

"Across the board, you could have picked out 15 fellas in each team that played absolutely unbelievable stuff. We were delighted and thank God we came out on top.

"But it was a hard-fought battle and nip and tuck throughout the whole game."

Victory for Limerick means it's a fourth Munster title in a row for the All-Ireland champions and they become the first county to lift the Mick Mackey Cup.

Manager John Kiely said it was an honour to receive the new trophy.

"The Mackey name is just synonymous with Limerick hurling and we're very proud to have been a part of that group that did that," he said.
