Scott Wharton issue Blackburn Rovers rallying call after Darragh Lenihan exit

Scott Wharton is relishing the opportunity to assume more responsibility at Blackburn Rovers following the exit of Darragh Lenihan.

Rovers are yet to make a senior signing in the transfer window. As a result, Jon Dahl Tomasson is offering opportunities to the academy's brightest prospects.

With an incredibly young squad at Ewood Park, Wharton has found himself as one of the more experienced heads despite only breaking into the first team last season. However, he's happy to assume the added responsibility in the dressing room.

"I would say there are a few tactical things," Wharton said when asked about the differences under Tomasson.. "He's keen for us to press, he wants us to press high when we lose it and goes as a team, not individuals.

"On the ball, we can be better. We need to trust each other, move it one and two touches and switch play.

"There are things to improve on and we'll be doing that over the next couple of weeks. For me, personally, I had a decent season last year and I want to kick on.

"I am excited for the new season and the challenge. It's a fresh start with the new manager coming in."

"Darragh was a big character in the dressing room, he was a leader," Wharton said. "That is football, people move on and people come in.

"We need to move on and players need to step up. People like myself, Trav and other young players because it is a young squad, at the moment.

"We want to keep pushing everyone forward and take on those leadership roles. I don't think there is a better time for a younger player or someone that wants to impress."
