Scott McTominay 'one of the best midfielders in Europe' and Scotland form proves Man United are daft to keep him out

Scott McTominay has playing for Scotland like he has a point to prove to Manchester United - and Erik Ten Hag won't be able to keep 'one of the best midfielders in Europe' out of his team for long.

That's the view of Chris Sutton and his fellow BBC pundit Rory Smith as the Tartan Army hero's stunning Euro form captures the attention down south. McTominay has six goals in just five Euro qualifiers and has become a key player in an advanced midfield role for Steve Clarke, but he's been reduced to late sub cameos under Ten Hag in the Premier League this season.

He scored against Cyprus and will be hoping for another eye-catching performance against club teammates like Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Maguire at Hampden on Tuesday night when Scotland face England. And Sutton, speaking on the BBC's Monday Night Club, reckons his free-scoring form is a message to Ten Hag not to leave him out any longer.

He said: "It's a really good message Scott McTominay is sending to Erik Ten Hag. 'Leave me out at your peril. I'm playing well for my national team, Manchester United aren't playing well, you better get me in.'"

Sutton's comments came after an impassioned plea by Smith who labelled him "one of the best midfielders in Europe." He said: "On McTominay, I do think this is really important. Some people think he's not good enough to play for Manchester United, that just depends how good you have to be to play for Manchester United at the moment. But even if he isn't, he's still one of the best midfielders in Europe.
