Scotland squad revealed as ex Man City starlet Cieran Slicker gets his shot for Nations League crunch double

Former Manchester City academy star Cieran Slicker has earned a shot to impress Steve Clarke and accelerate his push to be Scotland's No.1.

The 22-year-old – who was set to leave Ipswich on loan in the summer – has landed a promotion at international level due to his eye-catching displays for the U21s. And now with Angus Gunn injured and Craig Gordon in his twilight, Slicker gets his shot to impress ahead of the games with Croatia and Poland. Scotland can still avoid the Nations League trap door. Napoli duo Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour will star and Ryan Gauld is among the fringe men itching to prove his worth.

Clarke’s side headed into the double-headers against Croatia and Poland with just one point from their opening four games. However, after the Deutschland disappointment of Euro 2024, the Tartan Army will be encouraged by positive performances in the Nations League Group A so far, with a determined defensive showing shutting out Portugal at Hampden last time out.

Scotland can’t qualify for the tournament’s semi-finals, but could avoid automatic relegation to Group B if they leapfrog Poland or Croatia. The gaps to both sides are three and six points respectively, with third-place going into a relegation playoff against one of the lower group runners-up and second guaranteeing safety.
