After five seconds everyone could see we couldn’t play. But the referee put himself under so much pressure by letting it go until there was a goal. It would have been so much easier had he listened to me and Steve when we asked him before then to stop it, maybe after three minutes. We went back out in the end, but under huge pressure from UEFA.

When I was a player I always heard referees were there to protect players, but when they are under pressure from above, that physical integrity is sometimes not there. All I can say is thank God no one in this match was injured.
