Scotland Euro 2024 notebook as Manuel Neuer under pressure after latest gaffe and Lahm calls for 'emphatic' win

The pressure is on Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann to drop keeper Manuel Neuer for the Euros opener against Scotland after his latest howler.

Neuer was at fault once again against Greece in their last friendly before the Euros to add to a concerning list of recent cock-ups. Germany legend Lothar Matthaus reckons a change needs to be made between the sticks and has urged Nagelsmann to bench the 38-year-old year-old keeper in the opening game on Friday, who is set to play in his eighth tournament and win his 120th cap.

A number of high profile blunders for Bayern this season - notably in their Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid - has Neuer looking uncomfortable since returning from a long-term injury. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann backed him after the game and has already confirmed Neuer will get the nod over Barcelona keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to face the Scots. But German TV pundit Matthaus - the first player to play in five consecutive World Cups - admits he's worried about Neuer ahead of Friday.

He said: "We cannot deny these mistakes are mounting. That's obvious to anyone and there are too many of them. He has made repeated individual errors not just with the national team but with Bayern Munich too.

"The absolute security that you used to be able to rely on him has gone. In fact, the whole performance was worrying. There was a great atmosphere in the stands but it wasn't matched on the pitch. It was hardly the dream send-off this team and manager would have liked."

Meanwhile, Neuer's former Germany and bayern teammate Philipp Lahm has insisted his country must not just merely beat Scotland on Friday's Euro 2024 opener... they have to hammer the Scots.
