School put into 'lockdown' after police incident

A Greater Manchester school went into 'lockdown' this afternoon as police raced to the scene following hoax reports of an intruder.

Officers were called to Droylsden Academy on Manor Road in Tameside at around 12:20pm on Thursday (October 3), Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

Parents were informed 'lockdown procedures' had been implemented at the secondary school via a text message seen by the Manchester Evening News. The text added all staff and students are safe and 'further communication will follow this afternoon'.

It is understood that lessons have now resumed at the school.

A spokesperson for Droylsden Academy said: "Due to a hoax call which came from a member of the public with no known links to the school, we had to implement our planned lockdown procedures this afternoon.

"The police attended and gave the all clear once they were content that there was no threat to students and staff. As soon as it was deemed safe, lessons resumed as normal.

"Please can we take this opportunity to thank our students and staff; we are incredibly proud of how mature and sensible they were. The school would also like to thank the many parents and carers who have contacted us and thanked us for initiating our safety procedures so quickly and effectively."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 12.20pm today, officers responded to reports of an intruder at a school on Manor Road, Droylsden.

"Officers attended and no-one was located, with the incident currently being treated as a suspected hoax."
