Schizophrenic man chopped off his own genitals and bled to death

A man chopped off his own genitals and bled to death despite frantic efforts to save his life, an inquest heard. A dog walker discovered Reginald Alan Roach in a field - the 63-year-old was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Mr Roach was said to have previously pointed to his crotch and told a probation officer he was too old and "did not need these". An inquest in Caernarfon on Friday heard that Mr Roach had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and anti-social personality disorder.

The coroner heard from dog owner Margaret Webster, who described how she had been taking her collie for a walk by the Bryn Cegin Business Park in Bangor on November 6, 2022, at about 8.15am.

On her way back to the car retired nurse Ms Webster said she saw a "hump" on the grass, which turned out to be a man in the recovery position. He was lying on his right-hand side wearing a light jumper and black trousers with jogging bottoms underneath, WalesOnline reports.

She said he was "groaning" and she could not feel a pulse. "I lifted his jogging bottoms and could see blood covering his groin area," she said. She rang 999, knelt beside him, and started CPR. Police and paramedics arrived soon afterwards.

Police said they were called to a "concern for safety" incident at 9.15am that morning. Giving a statement to the inquest, a North Wales Police officer said: "It was then that I was informed by the paramedic that his genitalia had been cut off."

The officer also said in his statement he had been looking at photos of suspects that very day including one of Mr Roach, as he had been wanted on a warrant.

Mr Roach went into cardiac arrest and was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor
