Sammons hails Verreynne's promising form: He has a 'clear identity'

Proteas batting coach Justin Sammons hailed wicketkeeper-batter Kyle Verreynne on his standout performance during ongoing South Africa's Test match series against Australia.

The Proteas have had a dismal tour Down Under, having lost the three-match Test series 2-0 with the ongoing final Sydney Test rain-affected with Australia in control.

Verreynne took over the gloves after Quinton de Kock's shocking Test retirement last year and has firmly cemented his place in the side after he became one of the Proteas' only two Test centurions in 2022.

In Australia, South Africa's batters have had a horrid showing, making scores of 152, 99, 189 and 204 in the first two Tests.

Verreynne has been the only standout performer with the bat, notching up two half-centuries and leading as the top-scoring South African in the Test series with 149 runs in four innings at an average of 37.25.

When the Proteas' top-order faltered time and time again, Verreynne stood tall and grounded out partnerships to save South Africa from total collapses.

Sammons believes that Verreynne has come into his own in the Test side and remains a vital cog in the Proteas batting line-up.

"The growth within his game has been tremendous from last year, this time against India, that's when he came into the side on a more permanent basis when Quinny called it a day," Sammons told reporters on Friday.

"His growth has been tremendous, both from a technical point of view and mentally. I think he's figured out in his own way how to play at his tempo.
