Sam Johnstone to Man United: What do we know so far? Is a transfer likely to happen?

The goalkeeper’s contract expires this summer, meaning he is available to negotiate an exit from the Hawthorns as a free agent.

Tottenham Hotspur were said to be in pole position to capture Johnstone’s signature as recently as last week.

But now it appears that the Premier League club has competition in the form of Manchester United.

The 29-year old has featured 36 times in the Championship so far this season, conceding 33 times.

As Johnstone’s contract expires in a little over two months, he is available to discuss terms with any prospective new club without needing West Brom’s permission.

Manager Steve Bruce has confirmed that the England international wants a move away from the club in a bid to play Premier League football. 

According to Sky Sports, Man United see Johnstone as a potential replacement for one of Dean Henderson or David de Gea for next season.

Henderson is most likely to leave the club of United’s two goalkeepers, but with a new manager set to be appointed it remains unclear who will be first choice between the sticks next campaign.

Given West Brom do not look at all likely to be earning promotion to the Premier League, it is all but certain that he will move to a top flight club this summer.

Spurs and Man United are the two front-running options and frankly either would be a solid choice for Johnstone.

If United do sell one of de Gea or Henderson then Johnstone would make for a very solid number two option that could step in for cup games and the odd league appearance.

This would be a great fit for Johnstone as getting the opportunity to play at the highest level doesn’t come around all too often.
