‘Sad’ Charlie Austin issues West Brom verdict after latest setback

Charlie Austin has given his verdict on the malaise at West Bromwich Albion, admitting: “It’s sad to see.”

The Baggies sacked Valerien Ismael and replaced him with former Aston Villa and Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce, but the move has failed the galvanise the club’s promotion hopes.

Albion’s season plumbed new depths on Monday night as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Swansea City, leaving Bruce’s side 13th in the table.

It’s more than a year since Austin left the Hawthorns for QPR, initially on loan, but he remains fond of the club.

Appearing as a guest on talkSPORT on Tuesday, the striker gave his assessment of the Baggies' plight.

“They brought in the Barnsley manager [Ismael], a group of players that didn’t work out for them.

“It’s sad to see. That dressing room, half the team is still there [from his time at the club].

“They look a shadow of themselves from two years ago. It’s crazy. I watched them last night and, I don’t know, they’re a team with zero confidence.

“From the second half of last season [it looks like] every player has had the energy sucked out of them.”
