SA's top bowlers soar in latest world rankings

South Africa's Wayne Roberts and Anneke Scheepers have been given a big rankings boost in the latest World Bowls Series rankings.

Roberts has risen to fourth in the world with 674 points following his title defence in the Singles at the African States Tournament in September which was held in Botswana.

Crucially, he teamed up with debutant Shaun Thomas to win the Pairs event which further boosted his points haul from the tournament played among Africa's best countries.

"I'm very happy with the news ... obviously, I know that we don't have all that many events to play to earn points so winning two golds in Botswana was key. I'm pleasantly surprised that I've shot up to fourth," said Roberts.

"The World Champion of Champions is next and I guess, there's both a lot of pressure and none at all. It's such a strong field, so maybe I can fly under the radar a bit but then again, if I get some good results I can keep myself in the top 12."

Scotland's Stewart Anderson has moved to top position ahead of Malaysia's Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and Australia's Aron Sherriff.

Both Roberts and Scheepers will represent South Africa at the World Champion of Champions in Auckland, New Zealand, from 26-30 November 2024. It is their last opportunity to win points to boost their rankings.

The attraction of a top 12 spot looms large for both Roberts and Scheepers as the World Masters in 2025 will invite the top dozen men and women in the rankings at the end of the 2024.

"I'm very happy," said Scheepers. "There was a bit of work to get my points sorted out - under my maiden name and now my married name.
