SA's Lyle Foster makes it to the English Premier League after Burnley promotion

Bafana Bafana centre forward Lyle Foster is poised to end South Africa’s long drought without a representative in the English Premier League after his Burnley team was promoted on Friday.

Burnley earned automatic promotion into the richest football league on the planet after topping the second-tier Championship log, a position they secured after winning 2-1 at Middlesbrough on Friday.

Percy Tau was the last Bafana player to feature in the Premier League after he joined Brighton from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 but only made three Premier League appearances for them, including one start, and three FA Cup appearances.

Foster will rub shoulders with some of the best players on the planet after helping his team during the back end of their promotion push.

The 22-year-old joined Burnley from Belgian side KVC Westerlo during the January transfer window. He also recently helped Bafana qualify for the next Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in January last month.

SA’s last Premier League regular was Steven Pienaar, who transferred from Everton to Sunderland in 2016 before joining now-defunct Bidvest Wits a year later.
