SA's Harris sets up Indian Wells duel with world No 6 Berrettini

South Africa's Lloyd Harris set up a mouth-watering third-round duel with world No 6 Matteo Berrettini at the Indian Wells Masters.

Harris, the 30th seed and world No 32, beat unseeded Argentine Facundo Bagnis 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Sunday in his opening match in the Californian desert.

It's been a tough start to the year for Harris - he lost his first five matches on the ATP Tour and also suffered a shock Davis Cup defeat to Israel's Yshai Oliel.

But Harris will take heart from his performance on Sunday. He slammed 15 aces (Bagnis only managed 3) and broke his opponent's serve three times.

Harris now faces a tough task against 2021 Wimbledon finalist Berrettini, who beat Denmark's Holger Rune 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in his opening match.

Harris and Berrettini have played once before on the ATP Tour, with the Italian winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at the 2020 French Open.

Meanwhile, South Africa's other singles hopeful, Kevin Anderson, lost 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 to Australian Christopher O'Connell in the Indian Wells qualifying event.
