SA's Calitz chuffed after fours lawn bowls silver: 'We really stood together'

South African lawn bowler Bridget Calitz says she is extremely proud of her women's fours side after they clinched silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Tuesday.

Calitz joined Johanna Snyman, Esme Kruger and Thabelo Muvhango as they battled with India in the gold medal match.

With a medal on the cards, South Africa were favourites against a strong Indian outfit but in the seventh end found themselves trailing 8-2.

South Africa showed true fight and clawed their way back and after the 12th end, it was all square at 10-10.

India held their nerve and won 17-10 to capture gold and win the country's first-ever lawn bowls medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Calitz admits that things didn't go their way as they claimed silver for South Africa at Victoria Park.

"It was a very good game, we saw some shots they played and they got the better half of it. They're up and at it, and we couldn't get the oomph that they had. But it was good to play against them," said Calitz.

"We were so proud to get back as we were far down. We were happy and it gave us a boost, but in the end, it didn't go our way."

This is South Africa's first Commonwealth Games medal in lawn bowls so far and was the country's first on the fifth day of the Games.

Calitz, who was competing in her first Commonwealth Games, was delighted with her team's performance as they look towards Victoria 2024.

"It's a big thing, I'm so chuffed of myself and my teammates. We really stood together and I'm proud, emotional and really grateful," said Calitz.
