SA Rugby appoints new administrator for WP

SA Rugby on Thursday announced the appointment of Max Fuzani as new administrator for the Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU).

Fuzani, who will take up his role on 22 May, succeeds Rian Oberholzer who held the position since October 2021. Oberholzer will shift his focus to SA Rugby, where he was appointed as interim CEO in March.

Fuzani, 56, worked in government at national level between 1997 and 2017, most notably in the Department of Education as the Chief Director and Chief of Staff: Ministerial Services. He also served as a senior special adviser in the Department of Sport and Recreation before moving into consulting.

Fuzani will play a crucial role in facilitating the selling of Newlands Stadium, as well as a new equity deal for WP.

"The major work of the administrator has been completed with a clear pathway to restoring the financial stability of the union and ending the period of administration in sight," an SA Rugby spokesperson said in a statement.

"Mr Fuzani will oversee the final lap of the process by recommending the potential property and equity transactions to the members of Western Province for their approval."

SA Rugby said the proposals were expected to be tabled with the WPRFU membership shortly. If they are accepted, it would clear the way to ending the union's period of administration.
