SA-born Rippon earns maiden call-up for New Zealand
South African-born leg-spinner Michael Rippon is the only newcomer in New Zealand's white-ball squads for their limited-overs series against Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands next month.
Tom Latham is the captain for the ODI series against Ireland starting in Dublin on 10 July, before he returns home to New Zealand along with Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry, Will Young and Jacob Duffy.
Rippon has been selected as part of a 15-player squad for the following three-game T20 series against Ireland in Belfast, two T20s and an ODI against Scotland in Edinburgh, as well as two T20s against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 4 and 6 August.
Rippon's left-arm wrist-spin is a rarity on the New Zealand professional cricket scene and he's understood to be the first specialist bowler of his variety ever selected for the national side.
The 30-year-old formerly played for the Cape Cobras but also boasts international experience for the Netherlands as he possesses a Dutch passport. He has become eligible for the Black Caps after moving to New Zealand in 2013 to play for Otago.
ICC eligibility rules allow players to represent an Affiliate or Associate nation while still remaining available for a Full Member nation.
However, once they have been listed on an international match team-sheet for a Full Member nation they cannot return to play for the Affiliate or Associate for three years.
