S/Eagles fret over Osimhen’s injury as Nigeria prepares for Libya tie

The Super Eagles’ camp is worried by reports that Nigeria’s top striker, Victor Osimhen, copped an injury last weekend that could keep him out of action for up to two weeks.

Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray of Turkey, reportedly copped an injury during their league game against Kasimpasa, which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Osimhen, who is on loan to Galatasaray from Italy’s Napoli, scored two of his new club’s goals, his firsts in the Turkish league, but was subbed off in the second half due to injury.

A Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sources, who pleaded anonymity, told The Guardian, yesterday, that the federation is monitoring the situation to know the extent of the injury and what it means for the national team.

He said: “This is not the right time for Osimhen to be injured because of the many engagements his club and the Super Eagles have in the next few days.

“We are playing against Libya in a Nations Cup qualifier on October 11 and against the same team on October 15. Before then, Osimhen, who is just finding his feet in Turkey after his controversial departure from Napoli, has some important Europa League games this week and next week.

“We will know the extent of the injury when his club releases the report of the tests they carried out on the injury.”

Osimhen missed Nigeria’s first two 2026 World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic early this year, which Nigerian drew in Uyo and lost in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire respectively.

But he returned to lead the Super Eagles to a 3-0 defeat of Benin Republic and a goalless draw with Rwanda in the Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series early this month.
