Ryan: We can see how much Italy have improved

Captain James Ryan says Ireland will not look for excuses about new personnel when they review their Guinness Six Nations victory over Italy.

Ireland had to work hard for the 34-20 win that was only secured with Mack Hansen's try 10 minutes from time.

Andy Farrell had to contend without Johnny Sexton, Tadhg Furlong, Garry Ringrose, Tadhg Beirne and Robbie Henshaw among others, while there were relatively new partnerships at half-back and centre.

Half-backs Ross Byrne and Craig Casey were both making starting debuts in the competition.

"There were loads of new guys coming in and we're trying to build that cohesion but that’s one of the strengths of this squad, is the depth we have now," Ryan, who scored Ireland's opening try, told RTÉ Sport.

"We won’t be looking for any excuses in terms guys coming in or out. The guys who played today did a good job to get the result.

"We can see how much Italy have improved, it was a proper game.

"I think we were a little unlucky to go in 24-17 up, we left a couple of scores out there and they got an intercept. Look, that's what happens but I thought we showed good grit in the second half to get a result and grind out a win."

The team remain on course for a first title since 2018 and Ryan says focus will quickly turn to Scotland in round 4.

"Three from three so we are happy enough," said the 26-year-old.

"We have another two weeks now to prepare for what is a massive game for us, against Scotland in Edinburgh.

"We'll enjoy tonight, amazing Irish support over here today, we really appreciate it, makes some difference.
