Ryan Shawcross speaks out about Stoke City tweak involving Ben Wilmot

Stoke City legend Ryan Shawcross has been impressed with how Ben Wilmot has slotted into the right-back role at the Bet 365 Stadium, as detailed in his Stoke on Trent Live column.

Arriving in the summer from Watford, the 22-year-old emerged as a regular starter within Stoke’s back three, being part of a resilient backline that also included Leo Ostogard and Harry Souttar.

The young defender has since seen more of his game time from right-back, with Michael O’Neill reverting to a solid back four.

Penning down his thoughts of Wilmot’s recent performances from right-back, Shawcross said: “At right-back, Wilmot has got forward brilliantly in the last couple of games for someone who is a converted centre-back. He has been using his pace and youthful exuberance to get up and down the line.

“The main quality I look for in a full-back, perhaps especially a right-back, is the athleticism to get up and down and that’s what he offers. Then you need the quality on the ball to produce crosses and link-up play around the box.”

The verdict

Starting as a central midfielder, Wilmot has shown excellent adaptability and versatility in his short career to emerge as a standout Championship centre-back.

Now, he is excelling from his right-back position, adding another string to his bow.

The 22-year-old has all the necessary traits to continue shining from his full-back role, with his athleticism, reading of the game and technical ability, all combining.

Not only has Wilmot’s performances of late given O’Neill an extra option, but his continued success when operating in different roles will make him an even more trusted member of the squad.
