Ryan Porteous handed two match Scotland ban for Ilkay Gundogan challenge and Euro 2024 campaign could be OVER

Ryan Porteous' Euro 2024 tournament could be OVER after he was hit with a two match ban by UEFA.

The Scotland defender was sent packing just before half-time of the 5-1 Munich massacre at the hands of hosts Germany. The former Hibs centre back desperately tried to stop Ilkay Gundogan putting the Germans 3-0 up, throwing himself into a challenge on the Barcelona star. He initially won the ball, but caught Gundogan with a nasty follow through to leave him writhing in pain.

French ref Clement Turpin was sent to the VAR screen and it was little surprise when he brandished a straight red and pointed to the spot. Porteous knew he would have to sit out Wednesday night's crunch game against Switzerland in Cologne, where defeat will see Steve Clarke's men eliminated from the Euros and extend our run of never reaching a knockout stage. But now Porteous is relying on his teammates to take enough points to get out of Group A and give him a chance of playing again.

UEFA's Control Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) met to review Porteous' tackle. And they've slapped the Watford man with a two game ban, citing "serious rough play." The SFA will also have to cough up a fine of €5,625 due to members of the Tartan Army throwing objects inside the Allianz Arena.

Grant Hanley will likely come in to defence to replace Porteous against the Swiss. And now the Norwich captain could be set to start against Hungary as well with Porteous missing for that one as well.
