Ryan Edwards admits Dundee United squad left 'embarrassed and ashamed' after AZ Alkmaar thrashing

It certainly was not the European night that Dundee United had hoped on Thursday.

After taking a narrow one goal advantage to the Netherlands, it was not nearly enough for Jack Ross ' side who were thrashed 7-0 (7-1 on aggregate) on their travels. The scoreline equals the record Scottish European defeat, set by Hibs back in 2013. And more importantly, it means that the Tayside outfit bow out of the Europa Conference League before the group stages have even started. The qualifiers saw the Tannadice side play in Europe for their first time in a decade but their continental adventure has already drawn to a close.

And it has left the players feeling a little shy and quite simply embarrassed, according to defender Ryan Edwards. The centre-back told DUTV: "I'm the same as everyone else associated with the club - embarrassed, ashamed, all the words you want to throw at us and what you can think of, it was that.

"It seemed like any attack was causing us problems, and coming from our own mistakes around the pitch. People's families paid good money to come over and support us and obviously the fans as well came out in numbers.

"It's hard to take - embarrassment, shame, everyone is feeling the same. To be five down at half-time was unthinkable and it will take some getting over.

"But we have got another game on Sunday, and it sounds cliched and boring and the easy thing to say, but it's true, we have got to do something to get back to winning ways in the league."
