Rutherglen Glencairn win was far from easy Peasy, says boss

Joe Pryce praised his Rutherglen Glencairn side after they twice fought back from behind to beat Petershill 6-3 to stay top of the West of Scotland First Division.

Scott Jarvie gave Glens the lead from a fourth-minute penalty, but Alex Cassells levelled in 30 minutes and, after home captain Dom McLaughlin was forced off with an injury two minutes later, took the lead through former Glens star Jay McKay in 38.

Anthony McGuire levelled for Glencairn four minutes after the restart, but Peasy regained their lead through Dom Morgan in 56 minutes.

Glencairn stepped up a gear, and Matty Meechan equalised in 70 minutes. Jack McIlveen headed them in front four minutes later, then crossed for Roan Fitzpatrick to nod them further ahead, with Meechan bagging his second and Glencairn’s sixth of the game in 90 minutes.

That leaves Glencairn top of the table on 14 points, level with Lanarkshire rivals Cumbernauld United, but with a game in hand.

Pryce said: “It’s always better to be top than bottom, but it’s very early days, and there’s a long way to go in this league, as we know.

“We were 2-1 down at half-time, but managed to get them in and settle everything down, regain our composure, and I thought in the second half we were excellent. Scoring five goals against a really good Petershill team is good going, so I’m delighted with the three points.

“Petershill have had a good start. They’ve only played four games, but won three of them, and are having to play all of them away from home because of issues [relaying of their surface] and it’s not easy for them.

“I thought we started off very well, scored early on and could have maybe had another one or two, but their goalkeeper pulled off some fine saves.
