Russell Martin gives verdict on Michael Obafemi at Swansea City

The Irishman signed with Swansea from Premier League side Southampton last summer. 

Obafemi scored twice as Swansea made history on Saturday afternoon when they beat Cardiff City 4-0 in the South Wales derby.

This was the first time in the 110-year history of the rivalry that either side completed a league double. 

Martin now believes that Obafemi is showing what he is capable of and revealed that he sees the forward as a potential key player in the club’s future.

“I put it down to finding a level of consistency in his daily approach and his willingness to accept criticism and be honest with me and his team-mates,” said Russell, via The42.

“Most of all, he’s dropped his guard and is being himself.

“He’s just worked really hard, good attitude and the rest comes. He’s showing glimpses of his potential and hopefully he’ll become a really big player for us. 

“It wasn’t easy for him to come in and settle but for him to be doing what he’s doing is nice to see. 

“I’m really proud of him because he’s come a long way on and off the pitch and he needs to continue growing like the rest of the young guys do with us.”

Obafemi had a slow start to life at Swansea, barely featuring in the side for the first half of the season. 

But the 21-year old has become a much more important figure in the side since the turn of the year.

The former Southampton man has started 12 Championship games, appearing 12 more times from the bench, bagging nine goals in the process. 

The forward has started each of Swansea’s last seven league games, scoring six times.

Obafemi gave Swansea an early lead in Cardiff on Saturday, scoring in the eighth minute.
