Runner who tragically died taking part in Great North Run in memory of sister is named

A runner who sadly lost his life during this year's Great North Run, it has been named. Sam Wealleans, 29, from Northumberland, collapsed and died after becoming unwell during Sunday's half marathon (September 8).

He was running to raise funds for the mental health charity Mind in memory of his sister, Carly, and a family friend. The race was reportedly halted due to the heartbreaking incident which took place close to the finish of the 13.1-mile course.

Sam's loved ones are being offered support at this tough time. A statement from the event organizers, the Great Run Company, read: "All at the Great Run Company are deeply saddened by Sam's passing.

"We are continuing to support Sam's close family during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew him. In accordance with the wishes of Sam's family, no further details will be released, and we ask the media to respect their request for privacy."

A post-mortem examination is expected to establish the exact cause of Sam's death. The latest edition of the Great North Run boasted a record number of participants, reaching 60,000 runners, reports Chronicle Live.

Sam established a fundraising page for the Great North Run, aiming to collect £350. The initiative has remarkably raised more than £8,350 since then.

A heartfelt message from the fundraiser reads: "If the money I raise helps just one person who's going through a difficult time and prevents them from taking their own life I'll be happy! " Contributions are still being welcomed.
