Rugby World Cup news Live: Argentina pile pressure on Wales, Springboks announce and TV boss gone

The Rugby World Cup is approaching the business end, with a mouth-watering line-up of quarter-finals to come this weekend. Wales face Argentina first on Saturday, before Ireland take on New Zealand, while England v Fiji and France v South Africa will be played out on Sunday.

There is plenty to play for, especially with the controversial tournament draw which will see one of France or South Africa and Ireland or New Zealand head home early next week and miss out on the semi-finals. Wales head coach Warren Gatland was asked about the lopsided draw at his press conference on Thursday, and hit back, insisting they should have done better in the last World Cup to secure a decent seeding three years ago.

Much has been made of the draw, made back in late 2020 based on the rankings from the start of that year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has seen the top five teams in the world rankings prior to the tournament placed in Pool A and Pool B, with several critics bemoaning how it has made the tournament lopsided.

"I'd just say to the other teams they should have done better in the last World Cup, that's where the draw came from," said Gatland. "It's not our fault this happened. You didn't hear us complaining in 2015 about Fiji, Australia and England and ourselves in the same pool, we didn't complain about that." Read his full comments here.

Meanwhile, in other Rugby World Cup news, New Zealand have sensationally dropped winger Mark Telea for their quarter-final showdown with Ireland after a breach of team protocol. Telea, who has scored three tries in his two appearances at this World Cup before being rested ahead of the quarter-finals, is thought to have missed curfew, but head coach Ian Foster said: "I still love him”.
