Ruddock could complete switch from Ireland to Wales during Six Nations

Rhys Ruddock could complete his switch from Ireland to Wales during the upcoming Guinness Six Nations.

The former Ireland back row has not played for the country of his birth since 2021 and now could potentially feature for Warren Gatland's side at some stage in the upcoming tournament.

Ruddock’s father, Mike, is a former Wales international and could take advantage of World Rugby’s eligibility rules, which state that a player can switch allegiance three years after their final appearance.

"We understand that he is available at some stage during the tournament," said Gatland, speaking to RTE Sport at the launch of the Six Nations.

Ruddock will be three years out of the Ireland jersey on 14 February – his last appearance against France on St Valentine’s Day 2021 – and it remains to be seen if Gatland will offer him a route back into international rugby.

The Wales manager was non-committal regarding Ruddock’s future involvement, however, he admitted that there had been conversations about the 33-year-old, who played underage rugby for Wales before representing Ireland at Under-20 level in 2009.

"Given his age, he is not playing a lot or starting a lot for Leinster. But we know what a quality player he is," added Gatland.

"He made his decision a number of years ago in terms of his allegiance with Ireland, and we respect that, but we have had a couple of conversations about him and we have spoken to his Dad as well, and we understand that he is potentially available going forward."

Ruddock's stated aim back in March 2022 was to break back into the Ireland squad.
