Ruben Amorim has his Manchester United favourite back - but he can't get in the team

It took Ruben Amorim just one training session at Carrington to decide that Mason Mount was a player with a future under him at Manchester United. After a disappointing first season at the club following his £60million move from Chelsea, a change of manager looked set to be a turning point for Mount.

Since then, the compliments have rarely stopped, but on the pitch, the story has barely changed. Mount had gone five months without a start until playing - and scoring - against Brentford on Sunday. Even then, he lasted less than an hour despite being one of United's most dangerous attacking players.

In his first interview with club media after becoming United's head coach, Amorim was waxing lyrical about Mount and what he had seen from the 36-cap England international in his first two weeks.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” he said. “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

Staying fit has again proven to be the hardest part for Mount. The 26-year-old was making progress under Amorim, and when he started the Manchester derby on December 15, it looked like he had finally broken back into the starting XI. However, he lasted just 14 minutes before limping off with a hamstring injury.

That injury once again robbed him of momentum, and after returning to match action on April 1, it took eight substitute appearances before he was handed a start at the Gtech Community Stadium in a match as meaningless as they come in the Premier League, although for Mount
