Ruben Amorim decision shows Kobbie Mainoo is facing uncertain Manchester United future
Kobbie Mainoo's position has regularly been tweaked by Ruben Amorim in a stop-start season for the youngster.
Mainoo started successive Premier League games against Bournemouth and Brentford in the deeper midfield role, but he was relocated to the No.10 position against West Ham on Sunday.
It took just 10 minutes to see why Mainoo probably shouldn't be playing as a No.10 in Ruben Amorim's system. He was in the wrong position when Bruno Fernandes was scanning the options in front of him, which led to the youngster receiving an earful from an unhappy Manchester United captain.
Mainoo nodded as he listened to Fernandes' instructions. You cannot fault his effort and willingness to play in that role, but it's probably time to accept he's not as effective there.
Amad and Leny Yoro were the only players in red to emerge with any credit from the first half, but Mainoo looked notably lost in the No.10 role and Amorim pushed him back after West Ham scored their second of the match.
Mainoo returned from a muscle injury away against Lyon on April 10 and Amorim has made it difficult for him to find rhythm. He has continued to tinker with his position in recent weeks.
A source close to the player has played down the effect the changes are having on Mainoo. All the evidence suggests he is not at his best when he plays in the No.10 role in Amorim's system, which even Amorim recognised when he dropped him back to play alongside Fernandes.
Manuel Ugarte was hooked after he was dispossessed in the build-up for Jarrod Bowen's simple goal. The 24-year-old suffered a disappointing afternoon and it was logical to drop Mainoo back.
