Roy Keane questions Ralf Rangnick's consultant role at Manchester United

Roy Keane has raised questions over what Ralf Rangnick can offer Manchester United in the long-term, as he gears up to combine his advisory role at Old Trafford with coaching the Austria national team. Rangnick stepped into the breach as interim manager when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November.

Moving forward, Erik ten Hag will succeed Solskjaer on a permanent basis. Rangnick — who says he has yet to speak with the incoming Dutchman — has long since been earmarked for a position upstairs and that will come as part of a wider shake-up behind the scenes.

Prompting a fresh outlook, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has left and he will be followed out of the door by two leading members of the scouting team, as well as transfer negotiator Matt Judge who has resigned and will not play a part in the club's upcoming summer recruitment drive.

Richard Arnold replaced Woodward and, while further appointments have yet to be announced, questions have been posed by Keane over Rangnick after the German accepted an offer to manage Austria.

Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Keane said: "He could do that [advising] over the next few weeks. That can be just in the short term, where he's just passing on the information when he's working with the players. This idea that he needs to stay on as a consultant, I don't see it either.

"How many people do you need at your club passing down information on to the manager? He's going to bring his own staff. They've got a technical director, a chief executive, they'll have a scouting network, so surely the manager will be looking at that.... how many opinions do you need?
