Roy Keane and Erik ten Hag agree on what Manchester United need to do vs Man City

No doubt replays of Roy Keane’s challenge on Alfie Haaland, father of Erling, in the April 2001 Manchester derby will be rolled out on Sunday.

It’s a challenge that many say epitomises the furious rivalry between the two teams. The former Reds captain’s approach to derbies set the standard for his teammates.

Anyone who fell below would feel the wrath of his tongue, and he's no different as a pundit. Keane has become box office for his verbal lashings of United over recent years, justifiably in most cases.

He didn’t hold back when United slumped to a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in March. The team went into the game on the back of an eight-game unbeaten league run but after the defeat, they would only win three of their final 10 top-flight matches.

After a promising first half at the Etihad, United petered out in the second half and looked devoid of ideas, ambition and, unforgivably, effort. Keane ripped the team to shreds at full-time.

"The worst thing you can say about Man United is that they gave up, in any game to give up is unforgivable really," he said on Sky Sports. "There’s ways to lose football matches, we’ve all lost football matches but the way United lost today – they stopped running, they gave up, players not running back, that’s what I don’t understand."

To Keane and all other United followers, giving maximum effort is the minimum requirement. Erik ten Hag has repeatedly shown that he agrees with this.

Time and again, he has reiterated that he expects his players to leave everything on the pitch during training and matches. Right from the off, he made this clear.
